Under most circumstances, trees can be a real asset to the yards in which they grow. They provide shade in the summer, protection from high winds in the winter and can be an attractive part of a landscape design scheme.

Structural Hazards

Trees can also pose a hazard to other property, not just power lines. For example, if as a tree grows it begins to overshadow a part of your property, it can become a hazard, as there now exists the potential for the tree itself or even a large branch to fall down onto your property.

Don’t discount the chances the tree may fall on a person either. Again, if a tree has grown and is, for example, overshadowing a lawn where children play, that can make the tree a hazard.

Regular trimming and pruning of unwanted growth and dead wood will provide some protection from falling branches but again, in the long term, the better financial decision could just to have the tree cut down.

Split Trunks

You will most likely see this after a storm. If the trunk of your tree is split, it is only a matter of time before the trunk fails completely and the tree comes down. Even a small split should be very carefully monitored or inspected by a professional.

A split trunk will however almost certainly need to be removed by a professional as soon as possible.

Leaning Trees

Finally, this is another symptom that you may notice after a storm. A tree that has taken on a lean – even to a very small angle – is showing signs of serious damage to it’s root system, damage it likely may not recover from.

It is best that leaning trees are cut down safely and removed before they can become a serious falling hazard.

Mountain biking, paint-balling or even horse riding can all be great fun – if you have the space to accommodate such things of course. Even a small patch of land can be transformed into a welcoming area for picnics with the simple addition of a few trees.
